There have been many times in my life when I have asked the question,
“Am I worth it?”
Or, probably more often…
“What’s the point of my life?”
Take a look at this.

These are three generations of your ancestors—my great-grandparents.
They lived through times I can hardly imagine. Some of them had terribly difficult lives. Others lived lives that were comfortable, even privileged. They were all different people, living different stories, making different choices.
But every one of them was here, present and accounted for. They never gave up. And because they were here, their lives eventually led to you!
Think about that for a moment.
Through all the years, all the hardships, all the ordinary days and extraordinary ones… through marriages and births, losses and triumphs, national catastrophes, depressions, storms, trials, mistakes and second…third….fourth….chances…
Then there was you.
You are the result of an unbroken chain of human lives stretching back through generations. From the very beginning of all time. One link in a very long chain, of a very long story, leading to a very Brillant ending.
Most of these people never knew your name. They never got to see your face. They never knew what you would become. But they did know you would be here!
They may not have left behind great words of wisdom or monuments with their names carved into stone. They may not have made a lasting impression on the world. They may have only written their name on the bathroom stalls of life.
But they were here.
They left their little “I was here” upon this earth in the only way most of us ever do—by living their lives, loving who they loved, raising their families, working, struggling, laughing, crying, and leaving something of themselves behind.
And now…
You are here.
All of them before you say, YOU ARE WORTH IT.

And you know who else says you’re worth it?
God does.
Matthew 10:31 reminds us: God takes more pleasure in seeing you then the sparrows.
Luke 12:7 tells us that God knows even the number of hairs on your head.
Think about that.
The God who created the universe knows you that intimately.
And Ephesians 2:10: For you are his greatest Masterpiece. You are living art!
You are not an accident. You are not an afterthought. You are His.
My most favorite Scripture is this….. Isaiah 43:4.
It says:
“Since thou was precious in my sight, thou hast been honorable, and I have loved thee.”
God says it right there in black and white:
I LOVE YOU.

Sounds like He thinks you’re worth it, too.
So, it appears, darling, that the only one who keeps wondering whether you’re worth it…is you. Hmmmmm.

When those times come, step outside.
Close your eyes.
Take a deep breath.
And say out loud:
“All of creation is in balance together, and I am a very small, but very vital part of that.”
Then listen.
Listen to the birds.
Listen to the wind moving through the trees.
Listen to all the little sounds of life happening around you.
And while the mosquitoes are trying their very best to take every last drop of blood out of your body, remember this:
You belong here.
You matter.
You are part of this great, strange, beautiful thing called life.
And if truly countless generations of people you never met could somehow help bring you here…
then, darling, I think you oughtta stick around and see what happens next.
You’ve got this!
