Many people say, “When life gives you lemons, make lemonade.” But what happens when life moves your fence line? When the boundaries of life begin to close in around you. These times, although they happen to us all, are scary and uncomfortable. What do you do? Do you stay the course, or do you jump the fence? Both choices require consideration, courage, and adaptation.

Everyone lives within a fenced-in backyard of sorts. Depending on your circumstances, that yard may be large or small. If you are born into wealth, you may have a spacious yard. Others may share a community yard with their neighbors. These are circumstances often beyond our control.
When you look at the framework of the backyard, you can begin to see how our lives function. Within this fenced system, each of us have a certain amount of control. We decide what to plant, what furniture to put outside, and how to care for the grass.
If that were the extent of life’s challenges, then life might be easy. Unfortunately, it isn’t.
Sometimes our fence lines move. When they expand, we have new ground to explore and more to maintain. When they move inward, we have less to care for and limited flexibility.
Life is a series of boundaries. We are each responsible for a portion of this world, whether that means caring for a family, managing a business, leading a team, or simply tending to the responsibilities of everyday life.
Some people have larger areas of responsibility than others. Yet, regardless of the size of our backyard, we all experience changes that require us to adjust.
And it is that adjustment period I want to talk you about today.

Take Time to Consider
There will be times when circumstances beyond your control close in around you. Someone may place new restrictions on you, introduce rules that limit your choices, or change the conditions under which you have been operating. You may even find yourself facing a period of uncertainty that leaves you feeling trapped.
If you’re not careful, you can begin to feel helpless and without options.
But feeling trapped and being without options are not the same thing.
You may not be able to change the fence line, but you can still consider what to do within it. And sometimes, you may discover new attributes you hadn’t noticed before.
When sudden changes come, panic can set in. Your heart begins to race, your mind fills with questions, and the weight of having to consider so much at once can overwhelm you. It can affect your emotions and make it difficult to think clearly.
That is a very human response.
So, before making any major decisions, give yourself time to settle. You don’t have to figure everything out in one afternoon.
As we grow older and gain life experience, we begin to recognize that unexpected changes are really seasons of learning and transition. We may not understand why they are happening, but we can choose to approach them with open eyes and a willingness to learn.
Sometimes, change is an invitation to look at our lives differently.
After you’ve had time to absorb what is happening, begin to consider your options.
You may find that your own mind struggles to see beyond the immediate problem. This is when family and friends truly shine. Seek their help. Some people have a natural ability to think creatively. Others can look at a situation from an entirely different perspective. And then there are those who can find a glimmer of hope in every dark situation.
Keep those people close. Their wisdom, encouragement, and fresh perspectives are valuable beyond measure.

Figuring It Out
Perhaps your life up to this point has been comfortable. Your responsibilities and expectations have found a rhythm that works.
But then life happens.
It may be a new responsibility at work, a shift in your family circumstances, a financial challenge, or a door closing that you thought would always remain open.
Change is hard to ignore. But change doesn’t have to mean something terrible.
Sometimes a new challenge helps us discover abilities we didn’t know we possessed. We learn to think differently, develop new skills, and recognize new strengths within us.
Perhaps someone in authority is giving you a new responsibility because they believe you are ready to grow. Or perhaps the circumstance simply requires you to learn something new. Not every difficult situation is a test, and we cannot always know why things happen. But we can decide what we will learn from the experience.
And then there is our faith.
Perhaps God is using this season to open your eyes to something new. Maybe He is preparing your heart for a new direction, bringing new people into your life, or teaching you to depend on Him in a different way.
We may not understand His purposes at the time. Sometimes, it is only after we’ve walked a little farther down the road that we begin to see how one change led to another.
For now, you don’t need to know the entire plan. You are just being asked to take the next step, into uncharted territory.

Staying The Course
When change becomes difficult, you may find yourself asking, “Do I stay the course, or do I jump the fence?”
Both choices may be right, depending on the circumstances.
Choosing to stay the course while adjusting to a new fence line isn’t easy. It can feel like trudging through mud, searching for firm ground, and trying to establish a new normal.
But it can be done.
Human beings have an incredible capacity to adapt. We learn, adjust, and discover new ways of doing things. Sometimes, what first appears to be an impossible situation becomes manageable once we stop fighting the reality of our circumstances and begin working with what we have.
Start by making a new game plan.
Write down your new limitations. Identify the things you can control and those you cannot. Then, as difficult as it may be, begin letting go of the things that are beyond your control.
Now look at what remains.
Within these new boundaries, what can you do differently? Are there resources you could add? Could you change your routine, seek help, learn a new skill, or approach an old problem from another direction?
Perhaps the answer isn’t to do more, but to find a better way of doing what is already required of you. Oddly enough, it might mean doing less. Letting go of some things.
When you begin looking at your new fence line as a challenge rather than simply a restriction, your perspective changes.
Staying doesn’t mean giving up. It doesn’t mean you must accept every circumstance without question. It means thoughtfully considering whether there is still something worth building where you are.
Sometimes, the strongest thing you can do is remain where you are, learn what you need to learn, and keep moving forward.

Making The Jump
And then there are times when staying is no longer the wisest choice.
Circumstances change. Opportunities disappear. Workplaces become unhealthy. Relationships may become damaging. Responsibilities can grow beyond what is reasonable or sustainable.
Sometimes, the fence line moves so far inward that you can no longer find room to breathe inside of it.
When those times come, you will seriously need to consider jumping the fence.
Take a deep breath. Gather your courage. And remember that stepping away from what is familiar doesn’t mean you have failed.
You may not know exactly what awaits you on the other side, but you can move forward with faith, wisdom, and a willingness to begin again. You are not walking alone. God is with you, even when the road ahead is uncertain.
When you leave an old way of doing things behind, remind yourself that you are entering a season of transition. The sun will rise tomorrow. You will wake up, put both feet on the floor, and take another step.
Life will continue, and there will be opportunities to find your footing again.
But before you make that jump, there are a few things worth remembering.
The grass may look greener on the other side of the fence, but every backyard has its own challenges. A new place brings new responsibilities, new relationships, and unconsidered problems.
That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t go. But it does mean you should go with your eyes open.
Sometimes, the challenges on the other side may be easier for you to bear. If you have been mistreated in one place, for example, another environment may offer the respect and peace you’ve been missing. We all have personal limits, and those limits deserve thoughtful consideration.
Life will never be free of difficulties. But there should be room in your life for peace, hope, and the ability to wake up in the morning without feeling crushed by the day ahead.
As you consider give yourself the gift of time and space. Don’t accept the first opportunity simply because you’re eager to escape your present circumstances. Consider where each new road might lead. Seek wise counsel. Pray for discernment. And think about the life you hope to build, not just the life you are trying to leave.
The destination matters as well as the journey that gets you there.

What Will You Do?
This is a moment in time in which the decision is placed soley at your feet.
Will you allow this season to teach you something? Can you endure the difficult days without losing hope? Are you willing to adapt when your old ways no longer work?
And what will resilience look like for you?
You don’t have to answer all those questions today.
You are not alone. Pray through your decisions. Ask God for wisdom, and give yourself time to listen, reflect, and consider the paths before you. Trust that He can walk with you through uncertainty, even when you cannot yet see where the road leads.
Remember, you do not have to prove your strength by enduring everything without help. Sometimes strength looks like staying and rebuilding. Sometimes it looks like asking for support. And sometimes it looks like finding the courage to leave.
Leaders learn, grow, and adapt. They face challenges, make difficult decisions, and keep moving forward. Not every challenge will make life easier, and not every decision will bring immediate answers. But each season can offer opportunities to become wiser, more compassionate, and better prepared for whatever comes next.
You’ve got this, my darling.
Take your time. Choose wisely. And live with peace.
Life can be hard, but there is still so much worth living for. Each new morning, God gives us glimpses of His glory—little pieces of a picture we cannot yet fully see.
Then, one day, as we look back over the road we’ve traveled, He may allow us to see how some of those pieces fit together. What once looked like a collection of scattered moments begins to reveal something beautiful.
So, when life moves your fence lines, whether you stay the course or jump the fence…
Keep your faith,
Hold on to hope, and remember
A changing fence line does not mean your story is over. Your story continues each new and beautiful day.
I believe in you!
